While battling in hackmons, learn that anything can be possible in the metagame. There are no cheaters, server hackers, or any of that stuff in the metagame. It's just the Pokemon. Predicting is also a thing in hackmons. Try to predict whatever your opponent is using and what it might do. Learn about the Pokemon other people have as well as trying out your own strategies in battle. If you do this, you'll be able to become a great hackmons player. Here's how to deal with common threats.
No Guard OHKO moves: Wonder guard is immune to these moves, provided they are not weak to the type that the OHKO move is (e.g. if you are weak to ice you get hit by Sheer Cold). They often also carry status moves including gastro acid, so either substitute or magic coat is important to protect yourself from those.
Wonder Guard: Mold breaker, Turboblaze, and Teravolt ignores wonder guard completely. Gastro acid negates the targets ability until they switch out, but will not hit through substitute. Status like toxic, burn, leech seed, etc hits wonder guard, but usually not behind a substitute, and Curse when used by a ghost type hits through everything, but costs half your health.
Shadow Tag: Shadow Tag can be ignored by Pokemon that have Shed Shell. They can also be ignored by ghost types and other fellow Pokemon with Shadow Tag.
Magic Bounce: Mold Breaker, Turboblaze, and Teravolt goes through Magic Bounce.
Sleep Spam: Magic bounce and Magic Coat bounce it right back at the opponent. This is good especially if you're facing a No Guard opponent. Grass types and those with safety goggles are immune to spore, but can be hit by dark void, although that has a 20% chance to miss.
Mold Breaker/Turboblaze/Teravolt: Imposter Pokemon can take Mold Breaker, Turboblaze, and Teravolt down in some cases. Metal Burst and Focus Sash are another easier ways to take down Mold Breaker, Turboblaze, and Teravolt Pokemon. Whirlwind and Roar can be used to blow or to intimidate the opponent away into switching while they are trying to set up or while they're sweeping (and your Pokemon doesn't faint).
Huge Power/Pure Power: Extremely bulky Pokemon like Giratina, Slowbro-Mega, and Audino-Mega can tank a lot of Huge Power/Pure Power Pokemon especially if they have Fur Coat and King's Shield. Fur Coat and King's Shield are great ways of lowering the opponent's attack to make them do satisfyingly less damage.
Imposter: Imposter can be taken down by imprison or can be used to take advantage of on a certain basis if you know what you're doing in the match. Having an offensive Pokemon with Focus Sash can also be good to take down the Imposter if you set up your Pokemon too much before the imposter comes. There are also Imposter counter sets like this,
Gengar-Mega @ Spooky Plate
Ability : Mold breaker
Timid Nature
- Judgment
- Secret sword
- Shell Smash
- Substitute
Sturdy: Sturdy Pokemon can be completely countered by Mold Breaker, Teravolt, and Turboblaze Pokemon. Status can also can them down in certain cases.
Substitute: Substitute can break if you take down the 25% HP the user has given to it. There are also certain moves like Boomburst, Skill Swap, and Hyperspace Hole as well as the ability Infiltrator that can make attacks go through the opponent's Substitute.
Status and Hazards: Great recovery moves like Aromatherapy and Heal Bell will cover for your status. Defog and Rapid Spin clear all hazards away.
If you lose in battles, learn what made you lose, and then think about what could of prevented it.
